Governors are doin’ it for themselve

Question: Do governors determine for themselves how they undertake their role, or is the GB’s work largely driven by the headteacher?

Who sets the agendas for the FGB and committee meetings? Who decides on the content and format of the headteacher’s report? If an external review of governance is commissioned, who is in contact with the reviewer to discuss how the process will be carried out? Who makes the appointment of the clerk? (Just asking …. )

Now there was a time when they used to say
That behind every “great head”
There had to be “great governors”.
And in these times of change you know
It may be that’s still true.
But we’re comin’ out of the shadows
‘Cause there’s somethin’ we forgot to say to you

We say: Governors are doin’ it for themselves.
Standin’ on their own two feet.
And ringin’ on their own bells.
Governors are doin’ it for themselves.

Now this is a song – it’s to reward
The conscious liberation of the governing board!
Do we understand the boundaries of our role?
Governor to governor
We’re taking control!

Agenda setting is up to us
We need to choose the focus of what we do.
Everybody – take a look around.
Can you see – can you see – can you see?
There’s a governor right next to you.

[Chorus repeats]

Now we ain’t takin’ over
And we ain’t trying to rule
‘Cause the head still makes decisions
And the governors still support the school
(Just the same though)

Governors are doin’ it for themselves.
Standin’ on their own two feet.
And ringin’ on their own bells.
Governors are doin’ it for themselves.

…..

Based on:

“Sisters Are Doin’ It For Themselves”

Now there was a time when they used to say
That behind every – “great man.”
There had to be a – “great woman.”
But in these times of change you know
That it’s no longer true.
So we’re comin’ out of the kitchen
‘Cause there’s somethin’ we forgot to say to you (we say)

Sisters are doin’ it for themselves.
Standin’ on their own two feet.
And ringin’ on their own bells.
Sisters are doin’ it for themselves.

Now this is a song to celebrate
The conscious liberation of the female state!
Mothers – daughters and their daughters too.
Woman to woman
We’re singin’ with you.
The “inferior sex” got a new exterior
We got doctors, lawyers, politicians too.
Everybody – take a look around.
Can you see – can you see – can you see
There’s a woman right next to you.

[Chorus repeats]

Now we ain’t makin’ stories
And we ain’t layin’ plans
‘Cause a man still loves a woman
And a woman still loves a man
(Just a same though)
